Deepavali means row of lights in Sanskrit. On this auspicious day houses are decorated with rows of lights or diya, hence the name Deepavali. The festival is celebrated across India to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. In South India it is celebrated as a symbol of victory of Sri krishna over Narakasura. The lighting of diyas during diwali symbolizes purity, good luck, wealth and prosperity.

Normally these diya should be lit using ghee. Whereas the ghee or oil symbolizes negativity or darkness in our minds and wick as our soul. By burning the wick with ghee, we are purifying our souls. In many parts of India, people decorate their houses with 13 diyas, kept at different places for good luck and wealth.
